How could this be? How were we at this point after two years of trying? The doctor told us to go home and when you’re ready we’ll see each other again. My husband was very good to me and told me, it’s okay. We are happy and we have been happy… you and I will continue to be happy. We can continue living well without children. And when we are ready, we can reconsider other alternatives. We went home and I started to investigate. I had few eggs, almost none in each cycle, but really, I only needed one, right? And with one it couldn't work? As many of you already know, the chances were few, almost zero. So, searching, searching, I found a method that is used in many countries, which is a natural cycle in vitro fertilization. This means that during the cycle, that single egg is helped to grow, mature and be optimal for fertilization. In typical IVFs, what they do is make sure that you have many mature follicles to extract many eggs and thus have a much greater chance of success. To do this, you take a huge amount of hormones so that those follicles grow. In the case of what I read, you hardly take any medication. It is about that single follicle reaching term very healthy and of the right size. This technique is called NEW HOPE. My husband and I talked and decided that we wanted to try IVF at least once this way, with my eggs and his sperm, without resorting to egg donation for the moment. We talked about it at the fertility clinic and the doctor told us that she agreed with us and that she had thought the same thing. So at the beginning of December we began the process. First we had to do several tests that took a while so in the meantime, they prescribed me a “natural” medication for cell rejuvenation. Eggs are cells. In January, on day 1 of the prescription, we began the cycle. They checked on me every few days and what was the first surprise we had, that I didn’t only have one follicle, but I had 6. We started this battle with a good number of follicles! Halfway through the cycle, just before ovulation, we had to have at least one follicle that measured 18mm, which is a very optimal measurement to extract it. But that doesn’t mean that smaller or larger ones don’t work. I took the medication they prescribed me (girls, I won't tell you what it was because I'm not a doctor, and each case is unique). I can only tell you that it was very little. There were very few pills and very few injections. Along the way, a follicle was lost, I had 5 left. But only one was growing normally, the others were very small. They also told me that they would take everything out and then we would see. The day arrived. We went to the clinic, they anesthetized me and told me that they would take out whatever was there (at that moment I didn't know how many follicles we were talking about). The man has to extract his sample right there, at that moment and they take everything to the laboratory. And wait. Another long wait.
