But in recent years, there has been a significant increase in hate speech and targeted crimes against a particular community. Which is a worrying situation. Last year, Maharashtra alone recorded the highest number of such cases in the country at 118. In most of these cases, Muslims were targeted. Pune's Hadapsar constituency has more than 1.42 lakh Muslim voters. In such a situation, Newslaundry spoke to the locals about the atmosphere of fear created by hate crimes, their experiences and their concerns not only about increasing hostility but also alleged political marginalization. Neither the ruling Mahayuti alliance nor the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi has fielded any Muslim candidate out of the 21 assembly seats in Pune.
