I've titled this video: “Porsche 928: Objective, “kill” the 911”… and I'm sure some of you have thought that that's what I did to use this title, pure clickbait. Well, you're wrong. We're going to tell this story like no one else has told it to you and thanks to 0a100 magazine we're going to back up what we say with data, names and dates. #cars #classiccars #porsche #porsche928 Become a member of this channel to enjoy benefits: / hermetic garage And working with CEROaCIEN magazine is a real luxury, having reliable, quality information that is not always well known. On this occasion they dedicate 100 pages! to this model. And above all they tell very little-known things... For me CEROaCIEN is an essential magazine for any good enthusiast. I remind you again that CEROaCIEN is only sold online and that if you are a garage owner you get a discount using the code GH5… https://www.ceroacien.es/ Now that Porsche “gives it all”, be it SUVs, sedans, diesel, electric or hybrid, it doesn’t matter, and that electronics allow the 911 to be a car, from a driving point of view, “reasonable” we forget what the situation of the brand was like in the early 1970s. Its range was practically a single car, a car that Porsche itself considered then, more than 50 years ago! obsolete and inadequate for the upcoming market where safety, efficiency and comfort were key. The 911 was not particularly safe, in terms of active safety due to its complicated handling, in terms of passive safety because the engine was not in front and there was no “cushion” in the event of a frontal impact, its air-cooled engine was not a model of efficiency in terms of consumption and emissions, and comfort and habitability… let’s not even talk about it. Porsche was a family brand, very family-run, but very successful as a consultant, especially for VW, and as a manufacturer of sports cars. The 356, really a sports derivative of the Beetle, needed a successor and the 911 was born. Let’s not fool ourselves: the Porsche brand, as a car manufacturer, was born with rather modest ambitions. Despite this, the success of the 911 and the increasing orders as technical consultants made the brand grow a lot. At the beginning of the 70s this “family” company had 4,000 employees and manufactured more than 14,000 cars. But this success almost put an end to the brand, because you know that “family matters” are difficult to manage. Mr. Porsche, Ferry, the son, since the father had died in 1951, decided to professionalize the company and separate the Porsche and Piëch family affairs from business management. Ferdinand Piëch left for VW Audi, Ferry “Butzi” Porsche, grandson of Ferdinand Porsche, founded his own company “Porsche Design and… And who was left at the head of the Porsche brand? Well, Mr. Ernst Fuhrman, who was faced with a delicate situation… The USA was Porsche’s most important market and since 1965 with the appearance of the book “Unsafe at any speed” by Ralph Nader, society was very sensitive to the issue of car safety. This book, as famous as it was, for me, biased and unfair, attacked the Chevrolet Corvair and, incidentally, all cars with rear engines… as was the case with the 911. More problems: The VW-Porsche 914 was a decent success in the USA, but not in the rest of the markets. And Porsche’s proposal to replace the VW Beetle, the almost unknown and I dare say exotic EA266, did not take off. This prototype had a boxer mid-engine located under the rear seats and VW president Rudolf Leiding did not like it… The seed of the 928 was a project called “K sports car”. The first decision was to put the engine in front with rear propulsion. It was not an easy decision and if you want to know all the details you can find them in the magazine. The first option was a 60-degree V6 engine. But the winning option was a 90-degree V8 engine with hydraulic tappets to make it quieter and require less maintenance. In the first tests on the bench, 300 hp was easily reached, the figure that was the initial objective. Finally, despite so much fuss and so much development time, in 1978 the Porsche 928 was presented, for me one of the best Porsches in history and at the time with very advanced technology, with a magnificent V8 engine, a “Transaxle” system, a rear suspension system called Weissach that made the car very noble and docile for its power, and comfort and finishes of true luxury.
