Regarding pornography, Jesus said, “Anyone who looks at a woman with sexual lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart,” Matthew 5:28. Pornography: 1. Desensitizes: It promises sexual satisfaction but actually reduces it (James 1:14-15). 2. Atrophies our ability to exercise self-control, which is the ability to resist immediate temptations in order to achieve long-term goals. “A city without defenses or walls is like a man who does not know how to control himself,” Proverbs 25:28 (NIV). 3. Enslaves: It is a vice, an addiction. A person enslaved to pornography is never satisfied; he will always want more. 4. It leads people to prefer the world of fantasy over the commitment of marriage. 5. It demeans women: It leads men to see them as animals or objects to satisfy their passions. Pornography causes men to compare their wives to models of perfect bodies and leads women to hate themselves. How can we be free from the vice of pornography? • Knowing our weaknesses. What situations can lead us to pornography, masturbation, and fantasy? • Recognizing that we have the need to fill an emotional void or the desire to take revenge on someone, life, or God. • Knowing that loneliness, stress, feeling empty, fear, can make us fall. • Identifying if a movie, an image, a memory, is a temptation. • Getting rid of what can make us fall: internet, movies, music. • Avoiding watching television after a certain time. • Keeping the doors of our rooms and office open. • Having someone to whom we can be accountable. • Replacing sinful pleasures with pure pleasures: sports, learning, time with the people we love.
