This time, we will be delivering a "Front View of the National Railways Osumi Line" from a video provided by Seiji Minomo, a resident of Kumamoto Prefecture. The Osumi Line was a local line that ran 98.3 km from Shibushi Station to Kokubu Station in Kagoshima Prefecture. In 1915, a private railway, the Minamisumi Light Railway, was laid between Takasu and Kanoya, and the line was gradually extended. In 1923, the section between Furue and Kushira was opened, and the line became the Furue Line. In 1972, Shibushi and Kokubu were connected with 33 stations, and the line was renamed the "National Railways Osumi Line." The section from Osumi-Takasu Station to Kokubu Station was a scenic route, with views of the sea of Kinko Bay and the majestic Sakurajima. With the enforcement of the National Railways Reconstruction Act, the line was designated as a second designated local transportation line, and was abolished on March 13, 1987. The section between Kokubu and Umigata Onsen was called a "short-lived local line" because it had only been in operation for 15 years. In order to preserve the former Osumi Line for future generations, the "Kanoya City Railway Memorial Museum" is located in the old Kanoya Station building, where the Kiha 20-441 that ran on the Osumi Line is preserved in a static state, as well as maintenance vehicles and station signs for each station.
