In the new episode of the IMV Podcast, we discussed whether vegans are really healthier and live longer. After the previous episode of the IMV Podcast about the carnivore diet, this time we decided to analyze in detail the topic of a plant-based diet, which is at the opposite end of the spectrum of nutritional styles. In the introduction, we defined a plant-based diet and the individual differences between vegans, vegetarians and flexitarians. Subsequently, we discussed in detail the question of whether vegans are healthier and live longer, as is often presented on social networks. We therefore explained the issue of epidemiological studies and healthy user bias and analyzed the most famous studies, such as the American Adventist Health Study, the British The Health Food Shoppers Study, The Oxford Vegetarians Study and the so-called China study and many others. We also discussed the health risks of eating red meat and the difference between lean meat and processed meat products such as sausages. In the next part of the podcast, we focused on the most famous anecdotal evidence, which is spread by millions of uncritical supporters of the vegan ideology all over the world, including, for example, the well-known performer Moby. These claims tell us, in pictures of muscular bulls and horses, that all the strongest animals in the world are vegans, or that higher primates like our closest relatives are also vegans. How is it really? In the last part, we discussed the suitability of using vegan and vegetarian diets for risk groups of the population, such as pregnant and lactating women, children and seniors, and subsequently also the effect of a plant-based diet on sports performance. At the end of the episode, we traditionally devoted space to your questions in the Q&A section, where this time we answered questions about whether the keto diet has a positive effect on freediving, and how to recognize industrially processed food.
