On July 12, 2000, a Hapag-Lloyd Flug Airbus A310-304 flying from Chania, Crete, Greece to Hanover, Germany, on a route that involved a flight, took off for Hanover with its landing gear fully extended as a precaution because a malfunction had developed that prevented them from being properly retracted after takeoff. The plane eventually ran out of fuel while attempting to fly to Vienna and made an emergency landing short of runway 34. There were no casualties among passengers or crew, although the aircraft was written off.
