The Gliwice club won the championship title for the first time in its history! Piast waited 74 years for the championship title. Its history began a month after the end of World War II, in Gliwice, which had been destroyed by war. The club's board consisted mainly of Poles from the East. The first president was the then president of Gliwice, Wincenty Szpaltowski. This season, Piast dethroned Legia, dispelled Lechia's illusions in Gdańsk, and sent Zagłębie Lubin and Cracovia to the wind. In the match against Jagiellonia, it showed character and nerves of steel, fighting until the last second. Such an attitude had to bear fruit. Thanks to Piast's victory on Sunday, under the leadership of Waldemar Fornalik, the title of Polish Champion returned to Upper Silesia after 30 years. After receiving the cup, euphoria and joy erupted at the stadium, a shower of blue and red confetti showered the entire Piast team. The players poured a bucket of beer on the coach, celebrating in the same way as Bayern players after winning the German Championship. Internet forums were bursting with congratulations from fans of other teams. The president of the Polish Football Association, Zbigniew Boniek, also congratulated the club and the city in a letter sent to president Zygmunt Frankiewicz. During the decoration of the Polish Champions, all players and the training staff received gold medals and a cup. The gold medal was also presented to the president of Gliwice Zygmunt Frankiewicz and – posthumously – to his deputy Piotr Wieczorek (the medal was accepted on behalf of the father by the son). The priceless disc also ended up in the hands of Piast president Paweł Żelem, sports director Bogdan Wilk and co-owner of the club Zbigniew Kałuża. After receiving the medal, President Frankiewicz announced that from May 19, the Municipal Stadium in Gliwice will bear the name of Piotr Wieczorek, one of the initiators of the club's reactivation in the 1990s. Dedicated T-shirts, champagne and a lot of beer - this is what the historic celebration of Piast Gliwice at the stadium on Okrzei Street looked like. The players rejoiced on the pitch with their families, the fans in the stands. The championship celebration moved from the stadium to the streets of Gliwice. The players and the training staff got on an open bus and went to party with the fans.
