There are many legends surrounding the Persian Wars. You may have heard of the Spartans' fight against the numerically superior Persians. Mirko explains in this video exactly what the Persian Wars were and how they came about. The Persian Wars began with the revolt of Greek cities in Asia Minor against the Persian Empire. The revolts were crushed and the city of Miletus was destroyed. But the Persian Empire also wanted revenge on the cities of Athens and Eretria, which had supported the revolts. Under King Darius I, the Persians attacked Greece. They conquered Eretria, and a great battle against the Athenians took place at Marathon. Although the Persian army was much larger, the Athenians managed to put them to flight. One of the most famous legends of the Persian Wars is said to have taken place after the Battle of Marathon: the messenger Philippides ran the 42 kilometers from Marathon to Athens to bring the news of the Greek victory and to warn Athens about the Persian fleet - so the legend goes. The Persians did not attack Athens, however, but retreated. But the Persian Wars were not over yet. Ten years after the Battle of Marathon, Darius' son Xerxes attacked the Greeks again and the Persian Wars continued. On land, a small army led by the Spartan king Leonidas I managed to delay the Persian advance, but the Greeks soon had to retreat - Athens was taken. But the tide turned with the naval battle of Salamis. The Greek fleet was able to defeat the Persian ships and in 479 BC the Persian army had to withdraw for good. The Persian Wars are not only repeatedly taken up in stories and films, they also had a lasting impact on the history of Greece.
