Convection, top and bottom heat, grill function, cooking function, timer, telescopic rails or even baking trolleys: the possibilities are endless. Sometimes things have to be done particularly quickly, and that's when the microwave comes into play. But what does it have to be able to do? Can modern appliances replace the oven? Who makes the crispiest pizza? The oven test Expensive, mid-range or cheap? Ovens can easily differ in price by a few hundred euros. But does the higher price also mean better quality? To find out, our test ovens have to prove themselves with several classics, for example pizza and apple strudel. We also test how good the grill function of the ovens is and how easy they are to clean. And in addition to a laboratory test in which the power consumption is also tested, our test family also carries out the ultimate taste test. There are also the most important energy-saving tips: avoid preheating, use residual heat, remove unnecessary accessories from the oven, and use circulating air or hot air. When you're in a hurry: The microwave menu We tested a whole range of dishes to see whether the microwave can occasionally replace the oven: cheesecake, cherry dumplings, steak, Asian pork strips, egg pancakes and vegetable soup. Many of them worked really well, although the cheesecake was burnt. But are all the nutrients retained? And isn't the electromagnetic radiation from the microwave harmful? Two researchers from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology carried out the test for us. The conclusion: It doesn't always have to be the oven Even if it can't replace the oven, the microwave has done well. With the right tricks, you can even conjure up an entire menu. And not every oven is an absolute all-rounder. It's therefore worth taking the time to see how the oven in question is easy to handle when buying. And if the oven isn't that old, it might even be worth having it repaired. Because that's good for your wallet and for the environment.
