The ArenaAufSchalke (now known as the Veltins Arena) was opened on August 13, 2001 with a blitz match between FC Schalke 04 and Borussia Dortmund. The match was accompanied before and after by musical acts such as Right Said Fred, 10 of the Best, the German Tenors and the main act was Lionel Richie. The whole thing was broadcast on TV by Sat.1 with Jörg Wontorra as moderator and Olli Welke as outside reporter. I have shortened the opening ceremony a bit because the match was very boring. SPOILER at this point: It ended 0:0. On that day, the focus was not necessarily on football, but rather on the temple that would accompany this spectacle for years to come. In addition, the aim of all the show acts and clips was to show what the ArenaAufSchalke is actually capable of. In my opinion, Schalke and Rudi Assauer have done a particularly good job of this!
