Here, the Ukrainians perfectly executed a complex tactical maneuver to eliminate the Russian spearhead while maintaining their combat potential, leading to the complete encirclement of the Russian assault group. The Russian relief operation launched on the Ukrainian flank also ended in disaster, leading to the number of Russian casualties rising to record levels. As you may recall from the last report, the Ukrainians completely crushed the Russian mechanized attack on Malaya Loknya, destroying 15 armored vehicles with mines and drones. Despite this, the Russians managed to penetrate quite deeply into Ukrainian-controlled territory, passing through many towns in the northern part of the bag. The Ukrainians realized that holding the settlements in the face of such a large Russian mechanized attack would come at a high cost to the Ukrainian forces. This led to the Ukrainians temporarily abandoning the settlements and retreating to better positions. If we look at the topographic map, we can see that the road and settlements leading to Malaya Loknya run through lowlands, surrounded by forests and hills to the west and east. The Ukrainians withdrew from the settlements to the highlands, allowing the Russian convoy to pass and be destroyed by previously placed mines and FPV drones. The Russians dropped several smaller infantry groups into the settlements they were passing. The Russian plan was for these groups to undertake a general defense and secure the route for additional reinforcements that might pass through in the future. However, these groups were left defenseless and unsupported after the destruction of the mechanized forces. In the meantime, the Ukrainians maintained their combat strength by not directly engaging the Russian advance and occupied a much stronger position in the forests and on the hilltops. Since the Russians did not have enough troops to completely cover the settlements, the Ukrainians quickly entered the gaps and surrounded the Russian soldiers who were stuck in the settlements. The Russians realized the impending disaster and sent several armored vehicles to break through to the encircled soldiers. Unfortunately for the Russians, this time the Ukrainians did not allow the Russians to pass, as geolocated footage shows several Russian armored vehicles destroyed by the Ukrainian defenders. Russian military analysts later confirmed that no reinforcements were able to reach their troops and that these groups were completely cut off for days, relying solely on drone-dropped supplies. In an effort to save the day and turn the tide of battle, the Russians increased pressure on the Ukrainian western flank, launching five waves of mechanized assaults on Novoivanivka in just one day. It was here that the Ukrainians inflicted massive losses on the Russian forces, destroying 18 of the 29 Russian armored vehicles in the process. Despite this, the Russians were able to land several groups of infantry in the settlement and the tree lines around it, posing a serious threat to the Ukrainian western flank. The Ukrainians quickly dealt with the Russian threat by sending in several mechanized assault groups, supported by Bradley IFVs, to clear the Russian positions. Impressively, the Ukrainian armor modifications to the Bradley allowed them to repel several hits from Russian FPV kamikaze drones and safely deploy the infantry to clear the position. The original, uncensored footage of the Ukrainian counterattack can be found on our Telegram channel via the link in the description. Overall, the Ukrainians demonstrated excellent control of the situation and their movements, allowing them to gain a tactical advantage over the Russian assault forces. Executing a maneuver such as a retreat from the settlements and returning during actual combat requires excellent timing and coordination, which can only be achieved by well-trained and rested soldiers. Russian casualties increased as Ukrainian soldiers noted that the Russians had lost over three hundred men during the failed attacks on Novoivanivka and the subsequent Ukrainian counterattacks. Russian analysts were also among the first to conclude that the Ukrainians had successfully located the threat from the initial Russian front and regained control of the settlements.
