About :

This study was carried out as an activity of Cappadocia University Minstrel Art: 2024 Erzurum Year Project, with the aim of introducing the deep-rooted position of the Erzurum region, which has not only raised hundreds of minstrels, especially in minstrel art, but also formed schools, where the elements of the minstrel tradition are still alive and developed, from minstrel coffeehouses to oral culture products, to young people, in minstrel art and to contribute to the survival of the minstrel tradition. As the scientific activity of the project, the Minstrel Art Symposium was organized on July 4-5, 2024. The symposium; It is dedicated to the precious memory of our University's founder Alev Alatlı, who spent her primary school years in the Karaköse neighborhood of Erzurum, where she learned to always work for the country and to dream with it, who believed that it would open the doors of being the most honorable of creatures and perceived it as a struggle for existence, who likened bravery to being from Erzurum and made it a motto throughout her life and bequeathed it to the children of these lands, who passed away on February 2, 2024. Being from Erzurum, which inspired Alev Alatlı's ideas, works, identity and life on the way to reaching the ideal of Turkey, which she devoted her life to elevating and glorifying, is equivalent to dignity and virtue, courage and bravery, loyalty and sincerity; it is unconditional love and respect; it means a mind passionate about knowledge, good morals, virtuous manners and justice for everyone. Within the scope of the project, works reflecting the contributions of the Erzurum region, which is an important source that nourishes the art of minstrels, to the tradition were selected, these works were performed and recorded, and these videos were shared on music platforms. These works, which reflect the heartfelt voice of Anatolia, especially the Erzurum region, and leave deep traces in the tradition of minstrelsy, were recorded in various places where the tradition is kept alive and its traces can be seen. This work, which is a long air performance in the form of maya, whose source person is Mükerrem KEMERTAŞ, was performed by Tuncay KEMERTAŞ accompanied by Muhlis BERBEROĞLU on his bağlama in a historical Erzurum house. Mayas, a type of long air specific to the Eastern and Southeastern Anatolia regions; are mostly performed in the Hüseyni makam with themes such as love, affection, beloved, separation, and exile. During the performance, exclamation-laden additions such as “yavri yavri, oğlu of, ağam” are made to the beginnings of the verses that make up the mayas. With its unique melody structure and chant style, mayas, which differ from other long tunes, must be performed with a high and sonorous voice. (Şen and Akbaş, 2021) In Turkish folk poetry and oral literature products, a child (cub) is usually likened to a “lamb”. Especially any kind of evil, disaster, calamity, trouble, and negative events that will directly affect the “cub” and the characteristics of the perpetrators of these events are associated with the “wolf” image, which is used almost universally as a metaphor, starting from fairy tales belonging to various cultures and ending with the story of Joseph, which is frequently mentioned in sacred texts. Such a symbolic narrative also dominates the work. However, for the people of Erzurum, the wolf image also represents harsh natural conditions. In the work, the lament of a father who is devastated by the pain of losing a child, which is unlike any other trouble, and who cries out for his child whom he could not save from the clutches of death resonates. Even if death is a ruined homeland, the life in which the soul always wants to exist is now torment, too much, and cruelty to the father. In this world, the father who lives in a state of exile with the absence of the child who bestowed happiness on his homeland, gives up even on his only consolation, his lover, and waits for the day he will meet his child in the death tent. STAGE MOTHER THESE MOUNTAINS HAVE A WOLF Stage mother these mountains have a wolf The cub has migrated, what a ruined homeland Every brave man has troubles day by day My troubles are not like any of them The cub has migrated, I cannot reunite with its migration I scatter gold into every pocket, into your hair My guest, take it inside the tent I go to bed in spring, wake up in autumn, get up in winter I go and my hand was placed on my head The lover said don’t go, he hugged my neck Our fate was given away to exile Go and let go so that I can see your neck, my lover I go Source: Alatlı, Alev. “True Anger Arouses, Why?”.
