One of the most exciting destinations for me this train summer was the Östra Södermanland Railway (ÖSlJ), which runs between Mariefred, Läggesta and Taxinge-Näsby. I took a short trip to Mariefred last Saturday to catch the summer traffic with two steam locomotives in full swing. This association is one of the larger and more active, and they even organize activities later in the year. For further steam experiences, you could head down to the harbor where the steamboat Mariefred runs routes to Stockholm, which you can also see in this film. --- Filmed on August 10, 2024 with a Fujifilm XT-4. After serving on Gotland for ten years, it was taken over by ÖSlJ in 1961 and underwent a simple but necessary renovation. Despite challenges, the locomotive continued to operate until 1975 when the boiler needed to be replaced, which Alfa Laval financed. After an extensive renovation, Hamra has been a reliable workhorse in ÖSlJ traffic since 1985. In 2019, the machinery underwent a major overhaul, which has enabled the locomotive to continue its diligent service even today. ÖSlJ Locomotive 9 (Nian) This locomotive, manufactured by Motala Verkstad and delivered in 1915 to JGJ, has had an exciting journey through time. After serving at Aspa mill from 1935, it ended up in 1963 at Skärstad's home village association as part of a museum. In 2005, a long-term collaboration with ÖSlJ began, and the locomotive was moved to Mariefred. After an extensive refurbishment in 2006, it was put back into service in 2009. The locomotive underwent another upgrade in the winter of 2019/2020 and is now widely used in ÖSlJ's traffic, which continues to write new chapters in its history.
