About the author: Prosecutor, detective story writer and viscount. Shiro, one of the biggest families of the period, married the daughter of Viscount Arata Hamao, the president of Tokyo Imperial University (now the University of Tokyo) and founder of the Tokyo School of Fine Arts, and thus took the surname Hamao. After Arata died in 1925, he became viscount. That same year, at the age of 29, he took on the position of prosecutor at the Tokyo District Court. Three years later, he resigned, opened his own law firm, and began writing detective stories. This action was criticized by his relatives, who said that he left a prestigious position and wrote stories that "could not be considered literature." The detective stories he wrote were quite close to reality thanks to his experiences as a lawyer and prosecutor, and his works were influenced by Arthur Conan Doyle and Edgar Allan Poe. Hamao was also a gay rights advocate, and homosexuality occupied an important place in his works. Japan's most famous detective writer Edogawa Ranpo would say of Hamao, "I learned everything about homosexuality from him." Along with elements of mystery and suspense, Hamao vividly portrayed Japanese social life between the two world wars, and together with Ranpo, he is one of the most important names in classical Japanese detective fiction.
