MINE DIVERS OF THE GERMAN ARMY: Tough training to the point of unconsciousness WELT DOKU Reupload During training to become mine divers of the German Army in Eckernförde, the candidates face extreme physical and psychological challenges. Everyday life consists of holding their breath underwater, physical tests and endurance runs in freezing temperatures. The participants undergo swimming and freediving tests to prove that they are up to the demands of the elite unit. The Navy needs 120 divers, but only 32 are currently fit for duty. Many candidates drop out during the intensive training because both mental and physical strength are essential.
