About :

1. What does it mean to create a “digital twin” of a work of art? 2. How was the 3D model of Michelangelo’s David designed and with what technologies was it created? 3. What will the “digital twin” be used for? 4. How was the physical copy of David made for Expo Dubai 2020? 5. What prospects and fields of application will these technologies have for the conservation and enhancement of cultural heritage? The Government Commissioner for the Italy Pavilion at EXPO Dubai 2020, Paolo Glisenti, has commissioned Professor Grazia Tucci, from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Florence, to prepare the project and coordinate the creation of a life-size copy of Michelangelo’s David, housed in the Accademia Gallery in Florence, to be placed in the center of the Theater of Memory, part of the exhibition route of this Pavilion. This video illustrates the stages involved in creating the “digital twin” and the physical copy of the work: from the high-resolution digital model of the original, to the 3D printing of the copy, to its finishing with marble powder, and finally with its placement in the Italy Pavilion in Dubai, as part of the scenography designed by architect Davide Rampello. For the first time in the field of cultural assets, systems for capturing and processing information already used in the world of industry were used to create the three-dimensional digital model. This made it possible to obtain a very high-resolution “digital twin” of Michelangelo’s work of art, recording data on the materials and chromaticities of its surfaces, together with its metric data. The digital model constitutes an informative asset of great use for the conservation and study of the original. The digital model was created by the company Hexagon, the 3D printing of the reproduction was carried out by the companies 3DZ and 3D Venice, while the finishing of the surfaces with marble powder was carried out by the restorer Nicola Salvioli.
