As part of the 2015 Mathematics Week on the theme "Mathematics transports us" Conference by Mr. Bertrand MAURY Orsay Mathematics Laboratory, Paris-Sud University Lecturer at the Ecole Polytechnique Teacher at the Ecole Normale Supérieure on rue d'Ulm "Mathematics and Crowd Movements" on Monday, March 16 from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Henri POINCARÉ Institute Summary of the conference for middle school students: Researchers from different backgrounds (physicists, mathematicians, computer scientists, sociologists, etc.) have recently become interested in describing the collective movements of living beings. The potential applications of this research are numerous: synthesis of moving characters in video games, or animated cinema (war scenes from Lord of the Rings), or, in a more reality-based way, anticipation of traffic jams during emergency evacuations of public buildings, management of pedestrian flows in transit zones (train stations, airports). We propose to describe the modeling approach, which involves writing mathematical equations describing the movement of people in different situations, then solving them on a computer, until we arrive at animations that allow us to better understand, for example, how traffic jams can appear during the evacuation of a building. I would like to point out that this conference is intended for middle school students.
