Alpinists pay thousands of dollars for helicopter flights to be flown down from base camp and to relax in comfortable hotels. In the past, this would have violated mountaineering ethics. Trekkers are also increasingly using helicopters. The result: dangerously many approaches to the small mountain airport of Lukla. But the helicopter also provides important assistance in mountain rescues during the Everest season. Siddartha Gurung is a pioneer: he was trained in Switzerland by Air Zermatt and is now CEO of a company. Maurizio Folini was the first to rescue a mountaineer from an altitude of over 7,000 meters and during the season flies many mountaineers from Camp 2 on Everest down to the Lukla hospital for treatment.
