The Lamia Maskarada was created in 1978 and had its first performance on the last Friday of May 1979. The Maskarada is a unique festival that recovers the mythology of the Basque Country, in which popular participation is one of the main components. The marsh area of Lamia took its name from the lamias, since according to popular legend, the lamias met there. Specifically, the legend tells the story of a woman named Prudentzia who was turned into a lamia by the lamias. Several centuries later, the Lamia Maskarada recalls and reincarnates these mythical creatures of mythology every year by giving them the appearance of a festival on the last Friday of May. The Lamia Maskarada reenacts mythological episodes from our past in the form of a festival and, based on the legend of the lamias, tries to unite and gather the different myths of the Basque Country, presenting them in a festival; music and dance bring the myths and the people together, giving them their own identity. The Masquerade of Lamia emerged in 1978 and celebrated its first performance in May 1979. Lamia surrounded by marshes took the name of the Lamias because, according to legend, this was the meeting point for them. In particular, the legend tells the story of a woman called Prudencia who the lamias turned into one of them. Centuries later, the Masquerade of Lamia was in charge of personalizing these fantastic mythological beings and reincarnating them anew every year in the form of a party on the last Friday of May. The Masquerade of Lamia represents in a festive form mythological retracements of our past and based on the legend of the lamias it tries to unite and encompass the different myths of the Basque Country by presenting it as a party where music and dance unite myths and people giving them their own identity.
