Record of a lecture from the series Fridays from 17/02/2023 on the topic: Did the Germans cause the Middle Ages? A reflection on the demise of antiquity. The period, which we are used to calling the imperial period, especially the 3rd-5th desk AD, brings changes in the world of the Roman Empire and those that the inhabitants of the ancient world called "barbarians". The subject of the lecture will be reflection on how developments in the "barbarian" world, including our territory, influenced the fate and decline of the Roman Empire. However, it will also be about what internal changes this empire itself went through, what often intractable problems it ran into - e.g. in the field of agriculture, tax policy, citizenship, cities and countryside, whether we could even compare it with today's "captured states". and above all, to what extent it was still an ancient state at the time when its clashes with the "barbarians" were at its peak, and how far it stood alone in the world of the Middle Ages. Lecturer: Doc. PhDr. Jarmila Bednaříková, CSc. (* 1952), Czech historian dealing with the history of Late Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages, working at the Institute of Classical Studies, Faculty of Philosophy, Masaryk University in Brno. She published a number of books and professional studies, in which she dealt with e.g. the migration of peoples, the history of the Huns, the Germanic states and the social problems of the late Roman Empire.
