LEGANÉS 22 FEBRUARY 2023 / On Wednesday, February 22, the traditional burial of the sardine festival was held. The parade began in Plaza de España to go through Plaza de París, Mediodía, Antonio Machado and Getafe streets, Gibraltar Avenue, Maestro Street and arrival at the Fairgrounds where after the arrival of the carnival band and four participating groups, the sardines were burned and fireworks were launched. Ash Wednesday arrives and Carnival comes to an end to make way for Mrs. Lent. In Leganés, the burial of the sardine has brought together about a dozen associations in the two events that have been held in the city: in the streets of the center and in La Fortuna. Each association has brought its own representation of the sardine with its members dressed as a funeral procession. In the parade in the city centre, the first prize went to the Casa de Extremadura, which dressed its sardine in the regional costume of Extremadura, leading a procession of bishops of all kinds. Next in line was the AMPA of the IES José de Churriguera, which opted for a lunatic sardine with a procession of extraterrestrials, while the third prize went to the ADR Leman's with a sardine skeleton in a coffin and lots of music. Meanwhile, in La Fortuna, the big prize went to the Los K Falaban group, with a judge sardine 'La Gordita' and a large procession with a brass band included that enlivened the parade; while the second prize went to 20 Pa'K, who inspired their sardine caught in a net by the character of Wednesday Addams. The third-place procession, Las Diosas del Aire, opted for 'La Sharkina' in honour of Shakira: "You traded a pearl for a shell," read a sign, bringing the humour of the carnival to the very end. The parade, which went through the main streets of the two towns, ended with the traditional burning of the sardine, the presentation of prizes to the participating entities and the popular and free distribution of grilled sardines and lemonade to all attendees.
