ÖBR Vice President Erika Erber interviews the Austrian-American Zen master Chigan-kutsu Kyō-on Dokurō Roland Jäckel, Rōshi. Roland Jäckel was born in Innsbruck in 1962 and began formal Zen practice in the Japanese Rinzai tradition at a young age, first with the Viennese Zen teacher and long-time president of the ÖBR Genro Seiun Koudela, Osho, and later with Joshu Sasaki Roshi in the USA. After his death in 2014, he continued his Zen training with Shinge-shitsu Rōkō Sherry Chayat Rōshi, who appointed him as the first Dharma heir. Together with his wife Shūkō Marlene Rubin, he leads the Charles River Zen community (Boston, Massachusetts), and since 2016 he has been a Zen teacher at the Zen Study Society. He has been working at Boston University since 1994, first as a teacher at the music academy, then as a computer scientist and since 2022 as deputy dean.
