The search for fallen soldiers from World War II is not over yet. The German War Graves Commission receives more than 35,000 requests for information every year. Often, it is chance discoveries that trigger the investigation. Edla C. never expected to receive another lead on her brother. He was 10 years older than her, died in 1945 and became a legend for her younger sister. Now, at 86, she holds in her hand a stamp that she believes her brother was wearing when he died. And suddenly, the only photo she had left comes to life and she can feel the few moments they shared. These are the moments in the lives of Oliver Breithaupt and Kathrin Krabs that make their efforts worthwhile. Kathrin Krabs and Oliver Breithaupt are members of the German War Graves Commission. Volksbund employees in Germany still receive 35,000 inquiries every year from people who want to find out the whereabouts of missing relatives. It often starts with a small, seemingly insignificant found object: a photograph, a letter, an obituary, an ID. Sometimes, bones that were accidentally discovered during construction work are still found today. Volksbund employees rescue them with the utmost respect and care. Oliver Breithaupt and his team do not know what the results will reveal. It can often take years before they are able to recover the identity of the deceased, until the name can be engraved on a tombstone and the family has a place to remember them. Oliver Breithaupt's team searches for the war dead, no matter what war they fought in, what rank or name they held, or what they were guilty of. By piecing together the smallest pieces of the puzzle, they try to put a face to them, and their fate serves as an example to warn that war should never be repeated. #dwdocumentary #documentary #dwdocs #war ـــــ DW Documentary brings you information beyond the headlines.
