How not to store photography equipment One of the worst things you can do with your photography equipment is to store it in a bag. The bag is for transport, not for storing the camera or lens. When we think about storing our equipment, we are thinking about protecting it. We basically need to protect it with three factors: Protect the equipment from impacts, protect the equipment from dust and water, and last but not least, protect the equipment from fungus. When we store it in a bag, we protect it from impacts, dust and water, but we do not protect it from fungus. Quite the opposite, we create the ideal environment for fungus to proliferate. How to store photography equipment and prevent fungus on lenses and cameras? Fungi basically need three factors to proliferate: Organic material to feed on, humidity and darkness. Then you think - The lens is not organic! The lens has a layer, which I don't know how to explain very well, a kind of filter, which is the material that the fungus feeds on. The second factor is humidity. There are cabinets specifically designed to store equipment, which control humidity. The fungus proliferates at a humidity of 70%. Another factor is darkness, or rather, the absence of light. I say absence of light because fungi do not like light (UV). Now it is easy to understand why it is wrong to store photographic equipment in a bag. No light passes through! An easy and cheap way to store our photographic equipment and protect the lenses from fungus is to put it in a transparent box, with silica gel or even dehumidifiers found in any supermarket. This way we protect it against dust, humidity and darkness. Link to buy anti-mold at a discount on Amazon. Use the link and help me, and the channel! :) https://www.amazon.com.br/s?k=anti+mo... But it's not enough to just put all this in the box and forget about it. It has to be a controlled humidity level. The equipment has a series of rubbers and mechanical parts that need lubrication. We can't reduce the humidity to less than 35%, or we'll damage the equipment. To control the humidity, we use a meter called a HYGROMETER. But if it's too late, and the lens already has fungus, be sure to take some precautions so as not to completely ruin the equipment. Leave your lenses or camera in quarantine. Let them get a few minutes of sunlight every day for a while. This will kill the fungi that were there, preventing them from spreading even more! Other precautions when storing photographic equipment: Give them a light bath from time to time, Remove the battery from the camera and flash, Avoid organic materials and use synthetic materials as much as possible (glass, plastic, etc.).
