Throughout history, the Vikings have stood at the gates of Paris at least five times. Their attacks are nowhere portrayed more vividly than in the Vikings series. Ragnar and his warriors storm the walls from water and land, build floating siege towers, and face the defenders' elaborate traps, such as massive ballistae, cauldrons of hot oil, and a death roller. Paris holds out until Ragnar fakes his own death and jumps out of his coffin at the funeral in the cathedral to kill the bishop and take Gisla, the emperor's daughter, hostage. Vikings tells an epic, gripping story, but a story that never happened like this. This video is not about how historically accurate the series is, after all, it is primarily intended to entertain and a certain amount of artistic freedom is certainly justified. Instead, we ask which historical events form the basis for this part of Vikings.
