The Phantom F4, a two-seat, twin-engine, all-weather, long-range supersonic interceptor and fighter-bomber, became one of the most recognizable and feared aircraft of the Vietnam War. The Phantom first entered service with the US Navy in 1961, and after proving its effectiveness, it was also used by the US Marine Corps and US Air Force. In America, all military pilots dreamed of flying this super fast jet. During its four decades of flight with three different US military forces, the aircraft set 16 world records, and during the tense Cold War years of the 1960s and 1970s, the Phantom was the symbol of Western tactical air power. Between 1958 and 1981, 5,195 Phantoms were built in 12 models, flown by 12 countries, making it America's most prolific supersonic fighter. After the United States and Israel, Iran recruited the largest Phantom fleet in the world, and during the Iran-Iraq war, this fighter formed the backbone of the country's air force. Still, after more than half a century, Phantom is Iran's main operational fighter and even inspires the country's military industries to produce indigenous fighters.
