Hitachi has received orders for 46 streetcars in Italy and 240 new trains in the U.S. This is the second largest order in the U.S. after the subway cars in Washington, D.C., and Hitachi is finally entering the American market in earnest.

Hitachi Rail, Hitachi's railway business, won a contract in July to supply 46 new battery-powered streetcars and a digital signaling system to operate the trains to the city of Florence, Italy. It also won a 17 million euro (approximately 2.8 billion yen) maintenance contract for the streetcars that serve passengers throughout Florence. The new streetcars use cutting-edge battery technology and help eliminate electrified infrastructure, such as poles and pylons that support electric wires, which are expensive to install and unsightly. Meanwhile, the Southeast Pennsylvania Transportation Authority in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, ordered Hitachi Rail in July to replace the aging trains on its Market and Frankford lines. Under the contract, the Southeast Pennsylvania Transportation Authority will receive 200 trains and has the right to order up to 40 additional trains as an option. The total contract amount is a huge $724.3 million, or approximately 110 billion yen.
