High blood pressure, hypertension (HTN) or arterial hypertension is a chronic medical condition in which the blood pressure in the arteries is high. As a result of this increased pressure, the heart has to work harder than normal to circulate blood through the vessels. Blood pressure consists of two measurements, systolic and diastolic, which are related to the contraction (systole) and relaxation (diastole) of the heart muscle between heartbeats. Normal blood pressure at rest is between 100–140 mmHg (highest point) for systolic blood pressure and 60–90 mmHg (lowest point) for diastolic blood pressure. High blood pressure is when blood pressure is consistently at or above 140/90 mmHg.
