Qbuzz is deploying three Hess Lightram Hybrid double-articulated buses in the city of Utrecht. These double-articulated buses can transport up to 220 passengers, with seating for 50 passengers. In addition to a diesel engine, the Hess double-articulated buses have a small battery pack with a hybrid engine that is charged by braking. Hess built the three buses for Qbuzz Utrecht in 2012. These double-articulated buses were to be deployed there in the new concession. Connexxion objected to the award to Qbuzz. As a result, it was not certain for Qbuzz whether the new concession would be awarded to Qbuzz, which is why the order remained at three Hess double-articulated buses. After two years, Qbuzz was proven right and more double-articulated buses could be ordered, but this was done at Van Hool. However, the three Hess double-articulated buses were completed for use in Groningen. The buses were in service there for two years. This happened after major adjustments to the infrastructure (bus lanes were widened, bends were adjusted and stops were extended). However, the route on which the buses drove did not meet the requirements of the hybrid buses, which required a route with more acceleration and braking. Otherwise, the hybrid part of the bus would not work properly. That is why other routes in Groningen were looked at that were suitable for this bus, but they were not available. The city lines (with a lot of acceleration and braking) were too quiet for a double-articulated bus and the busy lines drove too much on the region. It was decided that the buses would therefore go to Utrecht to support the double-articulated Van Hool buses. The buses were painted yellow/grey in 2016 and were given the numbers 4218, 4219 and 4220. In 2021, these double-articulated Hess Lightram Hybrid buses still occasionally run on line 28, the busiest bus line in Utrecht that is fully equipped with double-articulated buses.
