► Subscribe to the RGO channel / @rgo_films “Hell’s Mouth” — this is how the name of Matua Island is translated from the Ainu language, according to one version. It became such a mouth in the 20th century, when the Japanese military equipped a powerful naval base there. After World War II, the island was ceded to the USSR, and once again it became an important strategic object. Today, the military infrastructure is abandoned, and the island has become uninhabited. A unique expedition to Mauta by researchers from the Expeditionary Center of the Ministry of Defense and the Russian Geographical Society is designed to unravel the secrets of the old Japanese garrison from World War II. Endless underground tunnels, mysterious structures, sunken ships and the untouched nature of the Pacific Ocean and the Kuril Islands — all this will be explored by the expedition participants.
