The question above is pertinent and makes sense: If I have to use a buried bare copper cable and it needs to be 50mm2, then there is nothing better than stripping a 50mm2 insulated cable and using it to interconnect the rods. Problem solved. Unfortunately, it's not that simple, and to answer this question I have to initially refer to two standards: NBR-5410 and NBR-5419: In NBR-5419, you will find in table 7 all the information and requirements for sizing the grounding cable, and in this same table it is already very clear that stripping the 50mm2 insulated cable will not work because it does not meet the requirements listed there in that table. Now let's see what NBR-5410 says. You will find the information in table 51, and it specifies that the cable must be 50mm2. It does not provide any more information, other than stating that the cable must have mechanical resistance and also corrosion resistance. In other words, if it is implicit that the cable must have mechanical resistance and also corrosion resistance, how can I ensure that my cable meets these requirements? I can guarantee that I am using standardized cables. That's right, there is a manufacturing standard for cables and I need my cable to be standardized, and only then will I be able to meet the requirements of both NBR-5410 and NBR-5419. The manufacturing standard for bare copper cable that meets all the requirements for being buried is NBR-6524, and all grounding cables used to interconnect rods that are going to be buried must meet this standard. But how do I know that the cable I am using meets this standard? The answer is simple: I know that the cable meets the standard because it comes with a plastic tape inside it guaranteeing this information. If you do not find this tape inside the cable you are using, it is because this cable has not been certified. Even if it is 50mm2 bare copper, be careful because it may not comply with the requirements of the standards. The advantage of the cable being standardized and undergoing tests is that it will guarantee mechanical resistance and also corrosion resistance, and can be buried without any problems. Another very common question is: Since I need to protect the cable against corrosion, I will connect my rods with a 50mm2 insulated cable, I will place it inside a conduit and then I can bury it and ensure that it will be protected against corrosion. I cannot do this because one of the main requirements of NBR-5410 and also of NBR-5419 is that my grounding electrode must be in direct contact with the ground and my cable is part of the grounding electrode.
