On October 7, 2023, the geopolitical landscape in the Middle East changed fundamentally with the Hamas attack in Israel, which is the basis for the development of events we see today in Lebanon and Gaza. Israel responded forcefully by entering Gaza, which developed into a humanitarian crisis for the civilian population. In 2024, the conflict in the region has escalated with Iranian attacks on Israel and a war breaking out between Israel and Hezbollah. The development leaves many questions: Will the escalation continue? What is required for de-escalation? What drives the actors in the conflict and what is their ultimate goal? Due to this development, Folk och Försvar has gathered some of Sweden's leading Middle East researchers to discuss the conflict and answer the question that many are asking: What are the risks of a major regional war in the Middle East?
