Interview given by Antônio Cândido about the work of Guimarães Rosa. Antonio Candido de Mello e Souza (Rio de Janeiro, July 24, 1918) is a Brazilian sociologist, writer and university professor. A scholar of Brazilian and foreign literature, he has an extensive critical work, respected in the main universities in Brazil. In addition to his work as a literary critic, he also works in academia, as a professor at the School of Philosophy, Literature and Human Sciences of the University of São Paulo. He is a professor emeritus at USP and UNESP, and holds an honorary doctorate from Unicamp. In parallel with his literary activities, Candido was a member of the Brazilian Socialist Party and participated in the Radical Group of Popular Action, which also included Paulo Emílio Salles Gomes, Germinal Feijó, Paulo Zingg and Antônio Costa Correia, editing an underground newspaper, in opposition to the Getúlio Vargas government, called Resistência. He later participated in the founding process of the Workers' Party, where, among other roles, he was President of the 1st Board of Trustees of the Wilson Pinheiro Foundation, a party support foundation established by the PT in 1981, predecessor of the Perseu Abramo Foundation. He is still a member of the party today, having supported Dilma Rousseff's candidacy in 2010.
