In 1929, Freud proposed a major reflection to the world with his text: “Civilization and its Discontents,” in which he listed situations of impasse that lead human beings to suffer: the natural decline of the body, the imperfection of our laws, and the internal demands for satisfaction. More than 100 years ago, the issue of human suffering gave rise to psychoanalysis. Today, it helps us understand the malaise present in our contemporary society. Depression, anxiety, compulsions, and so many individual symptoms; added to insecurity, intolerance, isolation, and so many other social symptoms of our days – what does all this reveal about our way of living? “Discontent, suffering, symptoms” – how they can indicate paths to transformation, both personal and social. This is the theme of this series of Café Filosófico, which will be addressed by psychoanalyst Christian Dunker. Program aired on July 3, 2016.
