In the 1998 summer Koshien final, he became the second pitcher in history to pitch a no-hitter, drawing attention as the "Heisei Monster." He joined the Seibu Lions as the first pick in the 1998 draft. He won the most wins and the Sawamura Award from his rookie year. He won bronze medals at the Sydney Olympics in 2000 and the Athens Olympics in 2004. He was the MVP of the World Baseball Classic in two consecutive tournaments in 2006 and 2009. In 2006, he signed with the Boston Red Sox and became the first Japanese pitcher to win a World Series. He returned to Japanese baseball in 2015 and joined his former team, the Seibu Lions, in 2020. He retired at the end of the 2021 season and is currently active as a sportscaster.
