In Normandy, traditional fishermen are facing a huge challenge: mega trawlers are using their dragnets to compete with them for fish stocks in the English Channel. A David versus Goliath battle... A single industrial mega trawler can catch as many fish in a very short time as a thousand conventional fishing boats combined. This has little to do with sustainable management of fish stocks. In the face of this unequal competition, traditional fishermen in Normandy are throwing themselves into a David versus Goliath battle. Frédéric, who has been a fisherman in the small town of Fécamp since he was 15, was once a fan of industrial fishing - but he has since changed his mind and is placing value on sustainable fishing methods. Although he is training his daughter to be a fisherwoman, he has doubts about the future viability of traditional fishing. Jean-François, on the other hand, is dedicated to training young chefs and introducing them to forgotten fish species such as Norway pout, red mullet and gurnard. At weekly markets, he educates customers about the effects of fish consumption and hopes to give people a new taste. Mathieu fishes for scallops eight kilometers off the coast in a nature reserve. The work is physically demanding and requires full commitment. Airplanes monitor the boats to ensure that no rules are broken. Thanks to these strict regulations, the Norman scallop fishery is now a model of sustainability.
