He was born in 1856 into a Jewish family in the Austrian Empire (whose territory was larger than present-day Austria). From childhood, he showed intelligence and a great capacity for work, which is why he was his parents' favorite. They told him that he was exceptional and gave him special treatment: he had his own room to study. He spent a lot of time in books - his parents even allowed him to eat alone in his office so that he could gain reading time - which explains his exceptional literary culture. As a teenager, when it came time to choose his career path, he was tempted to imitate his best friend at the time, who chose law to get involved in politics — however, Freud's admiration for Darwin convinced him to enroll in medicine. He read a lot of philosophy during his years at medical school (hence the philosophical dimension of psychoanalysis); he even considered doing a doctorate at one point, but his medical studies were too demanding. He met Martha Bernays, his future wife, at 25. Marriage, and its consummation, were postponed for 4 years — which made Freud suffer.
