He is one of the most legendary German athletes with international standing. But in 2006 he was banned due to doping allegations. In 2007 he officially retired, but his lowest point in life was still to come. In the Cologne Treff, the 50-year-old admitted to having "doped". "I was only part of the problem, but I didn't want to betray anyone, so I ended my career [...]. I'm paying for it and I'm the bogeyman of cycling and I'm accepting that now and holding out." But holding out proves difficult with the recurring headlines. He becomes addicted to alcohol and drugs. It was only when his wife left him with their four children that a "switch was flipped" in him. He worked through his past with psychological help and wrote a book. A documentary is released and suddenly old sponsors contact him. A "real accolade", so to speak. In a conversation with presenter Susanne Link, he reveals: "I decided to talk about it and now it's much easier."
