When the fair comes to the island of Föhr, all the islanders know that the quiet winter season is about to begin. Finally more time for friends and family after the tourist rush in high season. He deliberately sought out the peace and quiet of the island. Guitar maker Manuel May moved from Hamburg to the island nine years ago for love and children. He met and fell in love with his wife Anja on Föhr as a teenager. The native of Hesse has spent his holidays there since he was 15. Anja and Manuel lived happily in Hamburg for a long time. Then came the two children. The reason for turning his back on Hamburg. In Wyk on Föhr he found the peace and quiet he needs to make his unique pieces by hand, each costing 3000 euros. The finest replicas from the 1920s and 1930s are his models, with his personal hand-polishing. A dreamer and doer on the green island. Everything is cheese, even in winter, for the Hartmann family in Alkersum. The former dairy farm is now the first address for hand-made cheese on Föhr. Jan Hartmann taught himself the art of cheese-making from a book. Together with his parents and his wife Ina, he now runs the cheese dairy and a large farm shop. His customers: island supermarkets, hotels and restaurants and, of course, direct sales. Now in winter, when far fewer tourists shop in the farm shop, there is much more time for the family. Walks on the beach, bingo evenings in the Dörpskrog, all the things that fall by the wayside in high season. Organic farmer Jan Hinrichsen has realized a rather unusual dream. He is now the first whisky producer on the island. And his whisky is almost unique in Germany. From growing the barley to malting and distilling, everything takes place on the farm in the north of the island in Dunsum. The farm has been there since 1630. A lot has happened and changed since then. Emigration to America, return from New York, first conventional dairy farming, then Jan converted the farm to organic. Now there are robust cattle and Danish protest pigs on the farm. The organic barley is malted and then distilled. Experts have predicted that this will never work. But the success proves him and his family right. The three children and his wife support Jan's plans wherever they can. After three years of barrel storage, the first whisky is ready. Of course, this has to be celebrated with friends and neighbors. And when it's too cold on the island again, they call Frederik Jeß. He has been renting out hotpots and rolling saunas right on the beach for some time. More information: https://www.ndr.de/fernsehen/sendunge...
