"When I tidy up, I feel like I have my life under control," says Julian Schwirtz (31). There are hardly any dishes in the kitchen cupboard, and a few neatly folded items of clothing hang on a rail. Julian Schwirtz lives alone in a two-room apartment in Cologne. Everything has its place and each room has a color theme. He loves minimalist and tidy things and is right on trend: social media channels are full of tidying coaches. Adolescents film themselves cleaning or do "minimalism challenges." Where does this new urge for order come from? "We are currently experiencing the world around us as very fragile and ourselves as powerless," says psychologist and market researcher Birgit Langebartels. "For many, order at home helps against the chaos out there." Nicole Jacobs (46) is not one of them, however. "I could tidy up, but I always find better things to do," she says. Books, games and craft supplies are piled up in the living room of her family of five. The fireplace hasn't been used for 18 years because it's blocked. For the mother, it's more important that she does homework or plays with the children than that she keeps things tidy. "And if they don't like that, they just come to visit once and then never again. I don't have to impress anyone with a tidy house." Her husband has conquered a few tidy islands in the house where no one is allowed to leave anything. But he doesn't mind the mess at home. "It's never been a topic of argument between us, it's just too unimportant," he says. The family rejects professional cleaners. The Vogel family from Cologne sees things very differently. The three of them still live in 64 square meters, soon there will be four. The apartment is full of things that have no place, that's going to change before the birth of their second child. Because they can't afford a larger apartment in Cologne, they've hired an apartment optimizer to provide more storage space and clarity. ???? If you liked this video, give us a like! ______ ????
