We welcome none other than Eike Batista to Market Makers, the businessman responsible for one of the most surreal stories in Brazilian entrepreneurship. Eike has lived several lives in one: he was once the 7th richest man in the world, but he was also arrested twice during Operation Lava Jato. His life is so surreal that it was turned into a book and a movie in theaters. A brief bio of Eike: born in Governador Valadares, Eike Fuhrken Batista da Silva moved to Frankfurt, Germany, at the age of 12 because of the professional career of his father, Eliezer Batista, who at the time was president of Vale do Rio Doce. Eike studied Metallurgical Engineering at a German university but did not complete the course. While he was a student, he started selling insurance door to door. He returned to Brazil in 1981, at the age of 24, when he acquired his first mine and acted as an intermediary for miners from Mato Grosso in the sale of gold to the country's major centers. This was his first of several ventures into the world of commodities and precious stones. His peak as an entrepreneur came in 2012, when he reached more than 30 billion dollars and became the 7th richest man in the world. His fortune came from the companies of the EBX Group, which operated in the oil, mining, thermal energy, coal, ports and logistics sectors. However, in the following years, a succession of frustrations with the projects of the X companies caused the empire to melt down on the stock exchange, the most emblematic being OGX Petróleo, which was one of the most important stocks on the Ibovespa. Other companies, such as MMX, CCX and LLX also succumbed, while MPX Energia remains to this day and is one of the darlings of the stock exchange today, now under the name Eneva. This will be a conversation about the past, present and future of one of the most remarkable personalities of Brazilian capitalism. 00:00:00 - Opening 00:01:14 - Introduction 00:02:26 - History and career of Eike Batista 00:04:44 - Beginning of Eike Batista's entrepreneurial career 00:08:14 - Eike Batista's experience with gold trading 00:12:54 - Business expansion and partnerships 00:16:01 - The globalization of business 00:21:37 - Shop2gether 00:24:42 - Relationship with the capital markets and IPOs 00:27:24 - The untold story of OGX 00:51:28 - Discussion on investment philosophy and day trading 00:55:21 - Reflections on the collapse of OGX 00:55:52 - Ambipar's appreciation 01:01:45 - The future of electric cars 01:02:55 - Eike Batista's next billion-dollar business 01:08:29 - Presentation of the BRX project and market potential 01:17:36 - The importance of innovation and efficiency in business 01:18:12 - Elon Musk, BYD and electric cars 01:27:48 - Discussion on the role of the private sector and government in innovation 01:33:28 - The impact on Eike Batista's life 01:41:51 - Perception on the future of Brazil 01:50:36 - Eike Batista's vision for the future of Brazil 01:58:30 - Does Eike use Tik Tok? 02:03:11 - Ping Pong: Book recommendations 02:15:56 - Advice for Entrepreneurs 02:18:52 - Eike Batista's Legacy 02:24:36 - End - - - - - - - - EIKE BATISTA: power, business and failures Market Makers #122 Guest: Eike Batista (Brazilian businessman) Hosts: Thiago Salomão (@_salomoney) and Josué Guedes (@josueguedes_) #EIKEBATISTA #PODCAST #OGX #INVESTMENTS #STOCK EXCHANGE #THIAGOSALOMAO #MARKETMAKERS
