Delays, stress, train chaos: Deutsche Bahn's problems are no secret and are widely reported on. But we asked ourselves: What does the everyday life of a train driver actually look like? To find out, reporter Julian spent a day with Simon Hartwein. And not only that: The questions Julian asks mostly come directly from the community. We have collected questions for a train driver on our Instagram account "SWR Heimat". If you would like to hear your questions in one of our reports in future calls, please follow us on instagram.com/swrheimat or write topic suggestions and questions in the comments here. Back to the topic: Simon is 29 years old and has been working as a train driver for ten years. He used to drive ICE trains on long-distance routes. But commuting to Frankfurt was difficult for him. That's why he now drives for DB Regio from Mainz main station. Traveling by train is a childhood dream for Simon. His role model: father Hans Joachim, who is also a train driver. And Simon's wife also drives trains for a living. Very practical, because both of them know that the working hours can be quite tough. Simon's father says that it is easy to combine the train and family, but the family needs to understand the shift work. Of course we also talked about delays. According to Simon, delays can have many different reasons and are often chain reactions: if the train is shorter than usual, it takes longer to get on and off, and delays occur. In winter, frozen overhead lines can prevent the train from getting its power. And it is also clear that the railway has many problems in the rail network. The repair takes a long time and is unfortunately a vicious circle, says Simon: "If they've stopped at the back, they can start again at the front." Simon personally often does not find out the reasons why delays occur: as a train driver, he does his best and can only do what his colleagues in the signal box tell him. Despite the problems that the railway is having, Simon loves his job at the railway. He would choose to do it again in a heartbeat. Why? His fascination for the big machines, the special ambience at train stations at night, the quiet work in the driver's cab with a beautiful view.
