There were 155 of them, men, women and children... The Ottoman dynasty consisted of these 155 people and in March 1924, they were all expelled from Turkey... They were given two thousand British liras and a one-year passport with no return. Their assets were liquidated... They were forbidden from entering or transiting Turkey... They had neither a homeland nor an income... They lived an exile full of adventure... They worked every kind of job to make ends meet... Some worked as grave guards, some went door-to-door selling soap... Some died in foreign dungeons... Some married members of other dynasties and were given the title of nobility again... The exile lasted for 28 years for the female members of the dynasty and 50 years for the male members. In 1974, the entire family was allowed to return to Turkey. Some returned, while others remained in the countries where they had lived for years. The story of what remains today from a family that ruled the Middle East and parts of Europe for hundreds of years...
