Documentary ON (Saturday 11:40 p.m. KBS 1TV) “Empty House, Filling Up Possibilities” (Aired on March 24, 2023) ■ How about taking a break at my own countryside hideout on the weekend? The dream of a 5-do, 2-chon realized in an empty house In 2022, So-yeon Park quit her job at a famous coffee franchise company where she had worked for 20 years and is preparing to start a space designer and furniture brand. She has been living a 5-do, 2-chon life, working in the city during the week and escaping the hustle and bustle of Seoul on the weekends, for 4 months. In search of an empty house that fit her budget and taste, she went down to Geumsan, Chungcheongnam-do, which she had no connection to, 200km away from Seoul. The house was located at the end of the village alley, so she named it the last house with a red tin roof. She heard ominous voices asking if she was trying to experience a “ghost house,” but to So-yeon, the abandoned house covered in weeds looked like a house from a fairy tale. Looking back on herself, she decided to fix up an old abandoned house herself. With the skills she learned from chasing the interior construction team, every corner of the country house, from plastering to painting the tin roof, was filled with her own sensibility. The last house is still being transformed. She decorated the space with furniture she made herself and made plans to share it with others when she was away. For Park So-yeon, the hideous abandoned house in the countryside became a hope for realizing her own home and dreaming of a new future. ■ A 200-year-old abandoned house that became a model house for the romance of country life. The transformation of an empty house, young people gather. Jeollanam-do has the most serious empty house problem in the country. Gangjin Byeongyeong is a beautiful village with a Hamel-style wall and a stream running through it. Gangjin Byeongyeong, which was on the verge of disappearing due to the majority of empty houses and elderly people, is now experiencing a youthful breeze. The wind of change began with the couple Jang Seong-hyeon and Kwon Gyeong-jin, who returned to Korea after living in China for 10 years. A couple who dreamed of living in the countryside settled in Gangjin, Jeollanam-do, five hours away from Seoul, after falling in love with a 200-year-old abandoned house. The abandoned house, which had a warped roof and was on the verge of collapse, was transformed into a sweet home with a large garden and cozy hanok after two years of repairs. Once they had a place to live that they really liked, the next problem was making a living. The wife became an illustrator, and the husband formed a youth cooperative in the Gangjin area called 'Pyeondeul'. Once the cooperative was formed, young people who shared the same feelings gathered one by one, and they started projects that would help young people live and save Gangjin. Jang Seong-hyeon got a neighbor. The soon-to-be married couple, Lee Sang-jun, chose an empty house in Byeongyeong that they had been attracted to while visiting Jang Seong-hyeon's house instead of a convenient apartment in the town for their new home. Lee Sang-jun spent an unusually cold winter in an old house for remodeling. There were more than a few things to fix, but their love grew stronger as they planned a suite room that suited the tastes of the soon-to-be couple. With the settlement of Mr. Jang Seong-hyeon and his wife, empty houses that were a headache in the Gangjin community are now receiving attention as a resource for young people returning to farming and rural life. ■ Chungju Gwana-gil, a hot place from a gloomy tobacco alley Empty houses become a cradle for young entrepreneurs The problem of empty houses is not limited to rural areas. Gwana-gil in the old downtown area of Chungju, Chungcheongbuk-do. The alley, where only abandoned houses and trash were carelessly strewn about, was famous as a tobacco alley where juvenile delinquents would sneak cigarettes. The gloomy alley began to change 7 years ago. It was when Mr. Lee Sang-chang renovated an empty house and opened a café. Everyone tried to discourage him from starting a business in a neighborhood where even the locals were leaving, but Mr. Sang-chang chose an abandoned house with a strong Chungju flavor and began remodeling it and opening a café. It was the first case of old house remodeling in Chungju. The response was explosive. Young people in their 20s and 30s looking for emotional spaces lined up. Mr. Sang-chang helped part-time workers start businesses in the alley based on the success of the café and his entrepreneurial know-how. Half of the eight store owners on Gwan-a-gil are from Sangchang Cine Café. Mr. Cho Yong-hyeon from Seoul opened a photo café in an empty house next to Sangchang Cine Café, and Mr. Lee Jun-yeong, who is on leave from school, is running a café and guesthouse in an old 30-year-old boarding house. ■ Finding the possibility of regional revival in empty houses. We dream of a virtuous cycle in which those fascinated by the charm of empty houses settle in the area, they create the identity of the area, and this movement serves as a new opportunity for young people. The empty houses, reborn as spaces of opportunity and possibility for young people, are igniting the fire of regional revival! #EmptyHouse #GhostHouse #AbandonedHouse ※ [Documentary ON] Watch popular videos Korea's class, with all 12 of the world's largest ships fully loaded in Kosic★! • [Documentary On] All 12 of the world's largest ships were fully loaded in the Kosic ★...
