About :

※ This video is part of <Extreme Job - Ieodo Marine Researcher 1-2> that aired from November 17 to 18, 2010. Ieodo is something that everyone in Jeju knows. Jeju people, who have lived through hardships fighting against the rough sea, have lived dreaming of Ieodo as a place where they can live happily ever after, without any misfortune. Ieodo, a legendary island deeply rooted in the consciousness of Jeju people! Ieodo is located at the southernmost tip of Korea, 149km from Marado, and is an island 4.6m below sea level, so it can only be seen when a typhoon comes and the waves are high. That is why it is considered a legendary island because very few people have seen Ieodo. It is a very important sea area because it is connected to the Pacific Ocean and is a gateway to the ocean. Ieodo, an island with no address on the surface! We visited the marine science base located on the legendary island of Ieodo in Extreme Jobs. ■ 22 hours of war with the sea The Ieodo Ocean Research Station is operated as an unmanned surveillance system. However, about 20 people go in for about 2 weeks 6~8 times a year to manage the base and go on a mission to collect data necessary for ocean observation. This time, the personnel boarded the ship carrying food and equipment for solar cell construction and battery construction, and base inspection within the Ieodo base. And then the 22-hour war with the sea began. People are either taking a nap during the long voyage or checking their individual tasks, and they can't let go of their tension. When will they arrive? ■ Mission Impossible! Get off at the Ieodo Ocean Research Station. 22 hours have passed since the ship left the port. The next morning! The Ieodo Ocean Research Station, which rises about 36m above the water, comes into view. As the Ocean Research Station approaches, people start to pack their bags... Due to the sudden worsening of the weather, the waves are so strong that it's dangerous to even get off the ship, and it's a critical situation! With great difficulty, they moved only the steel beam with a crane, and each person climbed the stairs as high as the 10th floor of an apartment building, carrying heavy loads. ■ Ieodo Marine Base Diver Team The marine science base staff consists of experts in various fields such as oceans, electricity, communications, and machinery, and among them, the diver team formed for underwater research is a specially trained specialist, unlike general skin scuba divers. Their main mission is to find the location of lost equipment installed in the sea or collect discarded nets around the base! Since their lives may be in danger depending on the sea conditions, they must quickly and accurately complete the mission within the given time of 10 to 12 minutes. However, the current suddenly increases, and one of the divers who should have finished his work and returned is nowhere to be seen. It is not easy to find the diver in the sea! Where on earth did he drift? ■ Stuck at the base due to bad weather. The wind is blowing hard, and the waves are so strong that underwater work in the sea is impossible! In a 3-pyeong room, people spend their time doing laundry, cleaning, studying, and so on. Life on a base far from the land has many restrictions. Whether doing laundry, taking a bath, cleaning, or doing dishes, saving is the top priority. When the weather worsens and the ship that was supposed to bring food cannot arrive, the fight for survival begins by filling their stomachs with ramen or combat rations on the base. ■ Checking weather observation equipment through strong winds. The Ieodo Ocean Research Station has a helipad and 44 types of 108 pieces of the latest ocean and weather observation equipment, and observes the weather and ocean environment around Ieodo in real time, such as changes in water temperature, wind speed, waves, and air pressure. The data collected here is used to increase the accuracy of typhoon forecasts and prevent disasters. Checking the equipment that measures wind direction and speed located on the top of the base is one of the most important tasks that the Ieodo agents must do! Even if it rains or the wind blows, they must complete their mission. ■ A country with maritime territory is a true powerhouse. The Ieodo waters are a place where exclusive economic zone (EEZ) and fishing issues are constantly raised between our country and China. Since the Ieodo waters are home to a large population and diverse species of marine life, neighboring countries are also very interested in Ieodo. Ieodo is also a bridgehead for expanding our maritime activities to the Pacific Ocean and a starting point for expanding our maritime territory. The importance and future value of Ieodo are unimaginably great. What we need to do in the war with neighboring countries over Ieodo is to have constant interest in Ieodo and make efforts to protect Ieodo. ✔ Program name: Extreme Jobs - Ieodo Marine Researcher Part 1-2 ✔ Broadcast date: 2010.11.17~18 #TVViewingGolladunDocumentary
