Do you know the differences between the versions of the King James Bible? New American Bible Revised and Corrected American King James Version Revised and Updated American Bible Corrected and Faithful New American King James Version 21st Century The history of these versions of the Bible begins in 1676, when João Ferreira de Almeida, born in Torre de Tavares, Portugal, completed the translation of the NT into the language Portuguese, Portuguese from Portugal, of course. In 1689 Almeida began translating the OT but died in 1693 and his work was completed by the Dutchman Jacobus in 1750. The version of the Bible in Portuguese became known as the Almeida version. The linguistic interpretation method used by Almeida was formal equivalence, which translates the word literally, different from the dynamic equivalence method which translates the meaning of the context, creating an arrangement of words. In formal equivalence the word is translated literally, in dynamic equivalence the meaning of the text is translated. An example of formal equivalence is Psalm 92:10 in the American version it was written: “But you have exalted my horn, like the unicorn's”. Imagine a version that says that God blesses the horn, would have a very pejorative meaning today. Hence the need for revisions to the Almeida text. The Almeida Século 21 translates this same text as follows: “You have increased my power, like that of a wild ox.” This is because the word cuckold or horn has a sense of strength, of power. Another example is Psalm 7:9: “you test the hearts and the kidneys” In a modern version it says: “you test the heart and the thoughts”. Oops, it makes sense better. But we also have extremes in the use of dynamic equivalence, an example is the text by JB Philips when he translated the New Testament into modern English, and released Letters for Today. He translated Acts 8:20 this way: “You and your money go to hell!” Despite being a defensible translation from Greek, this meaning became shocking and was avoided, so much so that the Almeida Século 21 translates it as follows: “May your silver go with you to destruction!”. Okay, you already understand the need to update the language of the first Almeida. In 1898, a revision of the Almeida appeared called Almeida Revista e Corrigida, the famous ARC. Here in Brazil, ARC was launched in 1940 by Imprensa Bíblica do Brasil, which is an organ of the Brazilian Baptist Convention. ARC is a great version when you want to understand the literality of the word. But the Portuguese Vós, tu, dar-se-vos-a bothers me a lot, we don't speak this literary Portuguese. As the Portuguese language undergoes constant changes, in 1959 IBB launched Almeida Revista Atualizada, now trying to balance the formal equivalence method with dynamic equivalence. In 1994, the Trinitarian Biblical Society launched Almeida Corregida Fiel, but the textual basis of the ACF remained unchanged. Until in 2017 we were presented with the New Updated Almeida, it is the version that I use and like the most. It manages to unite formal equivalence with dynamic equivalence, giving us a text very close to the original with all linguistic relevance. It's my favorite version! In 2008, Vida Nova Edition launched Almeida Século 21, in clear and updated Portuguese, with footnotes on the manuscripts used. The most modern versions are the New International Version, based on the most modern theological and linguistic research. When we think about pure dynamic equivalence, we remember the Bible in Today's Language, released in 1988 and the NTLH released in 2000. They are translated versions with a lot of dynamic equivalence, that is, they translate the meaning of the word instead of the literality . The Message is a version launched by Editora Vida in 2011 and, in my opinion, it has spectacular language with fantastic linguistic precision. Finally, which translation is best to use? The answer is, if you want to reflect on the real structure of the word, use ARC or ACF up to King James. If you prefer to understand the meaning of the text, read the ARA, NAA, NIV or the NTLH.
