Discus fish classification and aquarium variety guide Discus fish belong to the Cichlidae family and within this family to the Symphysodon genus, a name that refers to their sparse dentition located at the mandibular symphysis (union of the jaw bones). Over the course of several decades this genus has been subject to a multitude of revisions, meristic studies (morphological characteristics) and more recently to genetic studies to classify the known wild varieties into different species. The conclusions of these studies have not been definitive to date, continually changing depending on the scientist or work group that carried them out. Since the first discus were discovered and defined as Symphysodon by Jacob Heckel in 1840, the classification of this genus has hardly changed. But the greatest advances and reclassifications were made from the second half of the last century to the present day, the most recognized authors of these studies would be, LP Schultz, Kullander, Burgess, Heiko Bleher, Jacques Géry, Ready, Farías, Hrbek, etc. Chronological classification of the Heckel discus Shultz in 1960, Burgess in 1981 Kullander 1996 and Bleher in 2007 classify the Heckel discus as Symphysodon discus or SD discus and its location in the Negro River Basin (central and northern Amazon River basin). Shultz in 1960 and Burgess 1981 classified a variety of the Heckel discus as SD Willischwartzi and its location in the Abacaxis River (central and southern Amazon River basin) Farías and Hrbek in 2008 classified the Heckel discus as a variety within the genus Symphysodon and generic species spp. Source: https://foro.portalpez.com/threads/pe...
