Hatem Qadri: At the beginning of Islam, there was a belief that the end of time is near. The expectation we have of religion today, that it provides a framework for our lives and future, was formed later. The choice of the Prophet's successor was not a divine order, and this is the reason why Ali ibn Abi Talib does not mention this matter anywhere in Nahj al-Balagha. Hassan Ansari: Basically, religion has a historical background. Relying on the historical nature of religion, we cannot conclude that it is not divine. In the sources of the 2nd and 3rd centuries, the words of Amir al-Mu'minin regarding the Prophet's emphasis on his succession are mentioned, but since the choice of Imam Ali as the fourth caliph was ultimately based on the issue of allegiance and the caliphate system of that time, they relied more on the same rules in their words.
