At the beginning of our attempt to talk about the various manifestations of religiosity in Chinese culture and life, we tried to find the basic patterns: What are the sources of our knowledge about the spiritual life of the Chinese and their ancestors? What strata of the population’s views do they reflect — and to what extent? Where are the most obvious blind spots in our perception of the problem? What approximate periodization of the history of East Asia — in application to our problem — can be proposed?
